Money Matters

"Money Matters" is the short form for "Money Matters Community Collaborative" - a group of local, community partners dedicated to helping people think creatively about finances. We recognize that money management can be stressful, especially in the wake of job loss or transition, homelessness, disability, immigration, changing economy, and retirement.  Money Matters can help you gain or re-gain the confidence and skills needed to successfully manage your finances.

At The Working Centre, Money Matters is delivered by our Financial Inclusion Outreach Worker within our downtown community help centre at 58 Queen Street South, and at St. John's Kitchen, 97 Victoria Street North.

Anyone can meet with the Financial Inclusion Outreach Worker at the Money Matters Desk: a drop-in clinic where people can meet, build relationship, get connected to community resources, and begin problem solving.  Appointments are also available, and can be made at the front desk at 58 Queen Street South, or by contacting our Financial Inclusion Outreach Worker directly (see contact info below).

Services include:

  • Responsive, one-on-one support
  • Income tax preparation, including tax returns for previous years
  • Assistance accessing tax credits and assistance programs
  • Assistance applying for Ontario Works, ODSP, EI
  • Budgeting assistance and resources in dealing with debt problems
  • Personalized problem solving around challenges associated with cheque cashing and payday loans
  • Help in building and maintaining relationship with a bank or credit union
  • Balancing financial priorities and commitments
  • Accompaniment to appointments where helpful
  • A confidential place to explore difficult decisions
  • Links to other community services

We are willing to creatively problem solve issues that arise, help you to connect to services and resources in the community, or simply come along to difficult or challenging meetings around your personal finances.

This project is proudly supported by a grant from United Way Kitchener Waterloo & Area.
