Published since 1971, Alternatives Journal is Canadas leading environmental magazine, fostering discussion and empowering readers with information to create a sustainable future.  
Each issue investigates a particular theme related to the environment be it ecological, social or political. Six times a year, we offer cutting-edge analysis that blends perspectives from across Canada and around the globe.  
 
JOB DESCRIPTION  
 
The successful candidate will work with Alternatives Audience Development Manager in these areas:  
Web and Marketing  
# Post updates on the Alternatives Journal website add new issue table of contents, online stories, manage blog entries, archive stories etc.  
# Provide website maintenance, in terms of graphic and other features  
# Provide web analysis and reporting on web traffic and online subscription rates  
# Stay informed of current online trends, and implement new opportunities to increase subscription sales and market the magazine online, including e-marketing and social media applications (Facebook, Twitter and cross-promotional opportunities)  
# Help develop other revenue streams for the Alternatives website, including traditional advertising possibilities, affiliate programs and other sponsorship marketing and links  
# Assist with other marketing and communications materials, such as e-newsletter, direct mail letters and subscriptions flyers, and Alternatives event posters/brochures  
# Other web and marketing duties as required  
 
Education Project  
# Assist with the development of an environmental education section on the Alternatives Journal website, which may include:  
- A database of all Canadian University and College environmental programs and descriptions, with information on how to apply, deadline dates, contacts etc.  
- News about specific funding possibilities in these areas, such as environmental scholarships, bursaries and grants  
# Encourage university and college instructors to use Alternatives for course text and/or use specific articles for course readings  
# Encourage other Canadian university groups to use Alternatives to enhance their environmental education  
# Research and assist in establishing sponsorship opportunities related to environmental education initiatives  
# Assist editors with creating Alternatives annual environmental education print issue  
 
QUALIFICATIONS  
# A strong interest and background in environmental issues and ideas  
# Experience in communications, marketing, public relations and/or journalism  
# A proactive self-starter with proven customer service skills  
# Knowledge of social media applications on the web preference will be given to those with web editing and online blog/publishing experience  
# Preference will be given to candidates with any experience using graphic design applications (e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and/or technical web skills (e.g. PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, CSS programming, Drupal)  
# Excellent organizational skills  
# Ability to work both independently and with a team  
# Professional demeanor in all communications
