What does it mean to keep relationships central in our work?

This June the Working Centre is hosting an afternoon workshop on practices that help us to keep focused on relationships in human services work. Join us in dialogue about building a workplace culture and strategies that put people first.

Meet people whose life’s work has focused on keeping relationships central.

Engage in roundtable discussions to learn and develop new approaches and creative ideas for reinserting relationships in your line of work.

Keynote Speakers include:

  • John Lord has been a leader and founder of several local, provincial and national initiatives designed to create positive change in human services and communities. John will speak about his extensive experience with communities and the New Story Group on the power of relationships and belonging.
  • Joe & Stephanie Mancini founded the Working Centre in 1982 as a community-based response to unemployment and poverty in downtown Kitchener. Over thirty years later they continue their relationship-centred work in a diverse but integrated network of 30 grass-roots community projects.

Table Discussion Hosts:

  • Nathan Stretch from the Working Centre will explore the significance of reciprocity in relationships.
  • Darla Fortune, PhD from the University of Waterloo and the New Story Group will explore how services can seek to foster wider community connections with people they support.
  • Jennifer Mains, who co-ordinates St. Johns Kitchen, will talk about “following the person” and the challenging nuances that putting people before rules entails.
  • Mark Yantzi, formerly from Community Justice Initiatives, will talk about the importance of fostering trust and how key this is to reinserting relationships.
  • Lindsay Salm Dube from Living All Dimensions will talk about the importance of vulnerability for genuine relationships and how complex this is in human services.

Cost: $20 per person, $50 for groups of three from the same organization.

Refreshments provided.
