Health Care Fundamentals (CLB Level 7 & 8) – Starting Soon

  • 100 hours of training
  • Designed for people who have achieved a CLB Level 6
  • Modular based design helps you to focus on specific workplace and enhanced level English language skills
  • Course will help you to achieve up to CLB Level 8
  • Training will include cultural understanding, listening, speaking, writing and reading skills, grammar and vocabulary skills, and pronunciation
  • Offered on a modular basis, evenings and weekends to accommodate a full-time work schedule

Modules may include:

  • Health Care Culture: What is health care culture, Canadian values about health care, discussing with others, making suggestions
  • Patient/Client Relations: Personal space, appropriate touching, age and gender appropriate language, reassuring/comforting patients
  • Working with Others: Different work styles, communication barriers, taking things “personally”, participating in discussion about work processes
  • Information Transfer and Management: Sensitivity to confidential information, Canadian privacy standards, levels of informality in requesting personal medical information
  • Meetings: Meeting protocols and roles, body language, giving input, softening language, negotiating, reporting, facilitating
  • Teamwork: Coordinating the work of others, group decision making, strengths and weaknesses in teams, instructing and instilling understanding and knowledge
  • Communication via Technology: Telephone etiquette, voicemail etiquette, coordinating with others, verifying information
  • Workplace and Professional Ethics: Professional ethics, reporting errors or wrong-doing, office politics, socializing with colleagues
  • Delegating: Delegating, giving feedback, clarifying
  • Troubleshooting: Analyzing a situation, appropriate lines of communication at work, job terms of reference and scope of authority/responsibility, territory, making recommendations
  • Oral Presentations: Giving effective presentations, eye contact, gestures, analyzing the audience, leading a post-presentation discussion
  • Employment or Promotion: Strategies for dealing with changes in different cultures, taking initiative, performance review processes, networking
