The Working Centre - Community Tools Projects

The Kitchen Community Garden Project

The Kitchen Community Garden is a one-acre volunteer operated garden providing bushels of fresh, organically grown vegetables, berries, herbs and flowers for St. John's Kitchen . Located on an 80-acre farm just on the outskirts of Kitchener, the garden provides a unique opportunity for volunteers to spend satisfying, quality time out of the downtown while working in the garden to produce fresh produce to take home.  The Kitchen Community Garden shares a large green house and garden tools with GROW Herbal Gardens.

Highlights from 2003
  • A harvest of 400 bunches of fresh cut herbs, 12 bushels of onions, 22 bushels of lettuce, 22 bushels of kale, 20 bushels of cauliflower, 120 litres of beans, and 225 large zucchini!
  • Approximately 1500 volunteer hours (including over 100 different volunteers on site)
  • An estimated 5-10 tonnes of compost taken from St. John's Kitchen
  • 50-60 visitors during our July Open House celebration
